Measurement, architectural drawing, and architectual model of abandoned houses ”Functions that are no longer used due to environmental changes and historical context."

From the 1970s to the bubble period. Many summer resorts and tourist attractions were created in Japan's regional cities.

Until about 30 years ago, Lake Haruna, the subject of this project, was popular among tourists as an ice skating rink, with the lake covered with ice in winter.

However, due to global warming, the lake rarely freezes completely and is no longer used as an ice skating rink in recent years.

The room I chose for this project is located in the basement of a former inn that borders the lake. The room is located at the same level as the lake surface so that it is directly accessible to the frozen lake, and was used for removing and putting on skates.

The inn closed down several years ago due to the economic downturn and has been abandoned for some time. The structure of the building is in danger of collapsing due to the lake's humidity, earthquakes, and age.

Project Description

While architectural drawings are created to actually bring an ideal form to life in terms of calculations, this project will be used as a record against the existing building.

This work is a measurement of spatial distortion and its visualization in the drawings, so that the lines drawn are not computationally straight, but more like natural shapes.

Production process

1. Using a taut line, stretch a vertical and horizontal reference line in the space every 50 cm.

2. Draw lines (as targets) on the same section of the ground, wall, and ceiling, respectively, from the taut line.

3. By measuring the distance between the taut line and the target (1 cm intervals at the finest point), a cross-sectional view can be drawn.

This process produces 14 cross sections in the longitudinal direction and 32 cross sections in the shortitudinal direction.

By visualizing lines of cross sections that do not originally exist as drawings, spatial distortions can be seen more clearly.

A 1/10 scale model of the floor will be produced based on the measured cross-sectional drawings.

I examined the color of the painted walls of a single region. In New York City, the exterior walls are painted and the paint fades over time.

By using the color chart (about 2000 colors of the Benjamin Moore paint) as a reference, I attempted to document the current condition of the walls as accurately as possible.

Many billboards are placed on the walls of buildings, on roads, and in train stations. In this digitalized world, painted and paper advertisements will disappear rapidly.

By observing the many billboards in a city, one can see the boom or bust of that city. In recessionary modern Japan, there are many white signs all over the city.

If you don't pay attention and try to look at the signs with nothing on them, they just look like they don't exist, like they are part of the building.

However, if you pay attention to them, they appear to be minimal art installed outdoors, or the opposite of the work and space in a white cube.
